What are roofing shingles and why would a homeowner want to use them? There are two main types of roofing shingle: wood shingles and asphalt shingles. Western red cedar is a very popular material used for making wood roofing shingles. The wood roofing shingles can be hand split and resawn, taper split, straight-split, or tapersawn and they are available in various lengths and random widths. Asphalt shingles appear to be small, individual shingles applied to roof. In fact, asphalt roofing shingles are large slabs that include many different shingles.
The standard size of the slabs is 3 ft. long. They are notched mostly for appearance and look like small individual shingles.Asphalt shingles are usually available in three main forms: organic asphalt shingles, laminated organic asphalt shingles, and fiberglass asphalt shingles. Organic asphalt roofing shingles are normally made of paper or felt saturated with asphalt in order to make them waterproof. The composition of the top coating of organic asphalt shingles consists of ceramic granules which may contain a certain amount of copper meant to discourage moss development on the roof.
The laminated asphalt roofing shingles are made with double layers which make them heavier, more costly but at the same time more resistant, too. Fiberglass asphalt roofing shingles are obviously made with fiberglass reinforcing mat. To this asphalt with mineral fibers is applied which was meant as an alternative to the traditional asbestos paper reinforcement. Although there are different types of roofing shingles, many people prefer to have asphalt shingle roof. In the USA at least, asphalt shingle roofing is the most popular form of roofing.
Actually, four out of five homes have asphalt roofing shingles. There are more reasons why people decide on asphalt roofing shingles but probably the most important is that its price is very attractive. The price of asphalt roofing shingles is generally lower than that of any other types of roofing. In addition, this type of roofing is quite easy to install. The two types of asphalt shingles a homeowner can install include composition and fiberglass shingles. Composition shingles are preferred by some people because they are made of organic materials, whereas fiberglass shingles are of obviously made of fiberglass.
Both of these types are considered asphalt shingles as whatever material they're made of, whether fiberglass or organic composition, they are then soaked in asphalt. Anyway there are other homeowners who actually prefer fiberglass materials because they are more fire resistant than the regular organic type.
There are, of course other kinds of roofing shingles used beside the above mentioned ones. Some homeowners choose to use metal roofing shingles, which resemble wood shakes. These are generally made of aluminum which has been formed to look like shakes. Although more expensive than asphalt shingles, this style is popular. On the other hand, metal roofing shingles may be preferred by some consumers as they are very fire resistant. In fact, if installed properly and with the right materials beneath the roofing, metal roofing shingles can receive A class in fire resistance. This is the highest class of fire resistance possible.
