Back muscle exercises are necessary to prevent recurring back problems. As the discs lose their natural shape, it stresses muscles in an unusual way, causing some muscles to be overworked while others deteriorate from non use.

But if you have low back pain, building up the back muscles will do little to alleviate the pain. Although the strengthening and increased mass will help a little in kepping the back from getting worse, you are really just building muscle around the problem.

Before you do back muscle exercises, you should first take care of the root of the pain. Bad alignment caused by misshaped disc. That condition is very easy to correct with a combination of extension and flexing exercise and some mild inversion.

It may take a few weeks of treatment before back muscle exercises will help build muscles anyway. In order to build muscle, it must be damaged by excessive work. The muscle then heals itself and grows. Your lower back area is too concerned with fighting inflammation to build new muscle.

Once you have gotten yourself to a very low level of pain, doing some stiff leg dead lifts using only the back muscles will build enough muscle to support the new alignment and keep you from suffering further episodes of back pain.

Back muscle exercises should be just a small part of your overall back care program. Once you make a commitment to end your back pain and do the small amount of work required, your back will respond with more flexibility and less pain.

So remember, freedom from back pain is a journey that requires many steps. It is equal amounts of flexibility exercises, mild inversion, and back muscle exercises.
